Types of SSL Certification

SSL Validation Levels
There are three security levels of SSL Certificates available, BitCommand offers them all.
Domain Validated (DV SSL)
The DV SSL certificate, being the most affordable and accessible, only applies to domain ownership verification. It provides minimal encryption and protection. It requires the easiest validation process in which the identity is checked simply by responding to an email or DNS Record or file validation. Furthermore, you are not required to give detailed information regarding your company. What is shown in the address bar are HTTPS and a padlock without showing the business name.
Organization Validated (OV SSL)
The Organization Validation SSL certificate offers a more advanced level of security is mainly used for the encryption of classified transactions. This certificate has moderate level of trust and the validation process can take as long as 2-3 days. A substantial validation process needs to be completed such as providing information about the organization, the physical location address and the websites domain. An Extended Validation SSL Certificate (known as EV SSL) is a stronger type of certificate for preventing phishing attacks. It is usually used by businesses such as banks or financial institutions that need to communicate a high level of trust to their customers.
A “wildcard certificate” is a type of SSL/TLS certificate that is used to protect all the subdomains of a domain.
To get an SSL certificate activated, you need to provide one of these documents:
- Articles of Incorporation (with address)
- Government Issued Business License (with address)
- Registration of Trade Name
SSL/TLS Certificates provide secure server-client communication by encoding the exchanged data so that only an authorized party can read it because it is the only party that has the correct key to decrypt the communication. Expressed in bits, encryption strength is a scale for measuring the level of encryption. Higher encryption strength means that a bigger number of bits are used in the encryption key and thus it takes longer for intruders to decrypt the data. While it is hard to decrypt data with128-bit encryption strength, it is much harder to decrypt data with 256-bit strength. So, we strongly recommend 256 bit SSL encryption strength on any application or website.
